Cheech Marin has developed one of the finest private art collections of Chicano art in the United States. And proudly, over many years, Cheech and his wife Natasha have collected a few of my paintings and ceramic pieces. I am truly honored and can’t wait to share the news.
“Chicano art is American Art,” a heartfelt phraseology created by Cheech Marin, and incredibly vital to so many of us Chicanas and Chicanos practicing art throughout Los Angeles and California. And much like his hilarious, and iconic performances as an entertainer, his lifelong passion for collecting Chicano art has evolved into a new vision, The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art located in the City of Riverside at RAM.
Wow! And to think this idea might have started taking shape back in 2001 – 2007 during his blockbuster exhibition, Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge, which broke attendance records over a twelve city tour. And there were other culturally inspired projects that kicked off in faraway places too, the 50th anniversary of Los Angeles/Bordeaux as sister cities, the Musée d’Aquitaine presented around 100 paintings and silkscreen prints from the Cheech Marin Collection.
And he didn’t stop, Cheech published Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection and offered his true secret of the exhibition, “ The individual parts are greater than the whole and size doesn’t matter! ” (Read more here).
I can’t wait to see the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art open in Riverside at RAM. And can’t wait to visit the Cheech Marin Collection with so many people unified by his incredible vision.
