So why does Yolanda teach? One of Yolanda’s most prized memories is a collaborative drawing created with her Grandmother, Margarita “Mague” Lopez.
When Gonzalez was 8 years old, she received her first paint set from Lopez. “We visited a SavMore store in Atlantic Square and returned back, where we painted indigenous women with baskets upon their heads, climbing up a hill. We worked on the piece together. The first smell of oil paint was incredible.

“What an amazing memory, to have painted alongside with my Grandmother. I admired her and loved her so much. Honestly, I never remember her not painting or performing on the piano. She was incredible, and really dedicated herself to the arts.”

These memories really inspire Yolanda to teach and work with others within the community. Yolanda shares, “For me, teaching art is a form of meditation, a way to share the amazing energy of creativity, and circulate the great feelings of a class into the universe.”
