CHICANITAS: SMALL PAINTINGS FROM THE CHEECH MARIN COLLECTION

20131220-091851.jpg

Perhaps best known for his work as an actor, director, and half of the comedy duo Cheech and Chong, Cheech Marin has collected Chicano art for the last 25 years. During this time he has built a renowned collection and organized exhibitions that have traveled across the United States. MCASD visitors might remember Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge, an exhibition featuring works from Marin’s collection that traveled to the Museum in 2004. Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection presents works by established figures such as John Valadez, Leo Limón, Patssi Valdez and Yolanda Gonzalez, as well as younger emerging artists such as Jari “Werc” Álvarez, Ana Teresa Fernández, and Sonia Romero. Each of the works in the exhibition takes the format of approximately 16 inches square or smaller and depicts subjects of a personal nature—familiar landscapes, notions of cultural heritage, familial relationships, and social community. In Chicanitas Marin has drawn together a rich variety of works that express the complex texture of Chicano experience.

Quetzal wins Grammy…. I’m honored to hand paint Martha Gonzalez’s dress!

20130210-225710.jpg

Quetzal… are one of my favorite Artists/ Musicians! I received a message from Martha Gonzalez lead singer requesting I paint on a dress for the Grammy’s. I suggested Rebecca Moreno from Goldsmith Klein . Rebecca is incredible at her designs and a long time friend. There were a few fittings at my studio. I found myself Friday night looking at a dress that was to be worn on Sunday at the Grammys! Think of it as a canvas, I kept thinking!

I painted with thoughts of Martha a Artist I admire more than words can describe.
I consider Quetzal …shaman, healers, and soul shakers.

When I presented Martha the dress at my studio Sat I realized how important this collaboration
was. It brought tears to my eyes when I saw how much she loved it. Martha is also wearing the Jewelry designs of “El Maestro” Sergio Flores.

Art transforms the energy of this earth! Thank you Martha for the opportunity to share in your magic!

Century City celebrates holidays with colorful reindeer

Reindeer painted by Los Angeles artists will be on display around Westfield Century City and Century Park through the holiday season. (Ingenthron/Chai )

By Susan Denley
November 21, 2012

Colorful handpainted reindeer in a variety of unique patterns deck out Westfield Century City this holiday season, thanks to theReindeer Project. Eleven acrylic deer were painted by artists including Aaron Axelrod (who designed two reindeer), Couto Brothers, Yolanda González, Man One, Greg Miller, Max Neutra, Marilinda Rivera, Analia Saban, Johnny Taylor and Robert Vargas. The 12th deer was painted by Inner-City Arts students.

Four reindeer were sold at an auction last week, and the others may be bid on through Dec. 10 on CharityBuzz.com, with proceeds benefiting Inner-City Arts, a nonprofit arts education organization for disadvantaged youngsters. Bids start at $1,000 and rise in $200 increments.

All of the deer are to remain on display at the mall and nearby Century Park through Jan. 1. The mall is at 10250 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles.
